The traveler walking from Edo to Kyoto on The Tokaido (The Great Sea Road) would pass through this town on the first day, probably early afternoon. This wonderful design shows the snaking Tsurumi river, complete with log rafts and sailboats, with Fuji looming in the distance. As the traveler continues, Fuji will loom larger and larger. The "Upright Tokaido" is one of the first series in which Hiroshige turned his landscape compositions on their sides, creating striking vertical designs. This allowed him to accentuate perspective and Japan's dramatic topography. He would continue with this format with greater and greater success for the rest of his life
