The classic Japanese literary work "The Tale of Genji" is a common Ukiyo-e theme, but this triptych by Kunisada II is extraordinarily rare -- and extraordinarily beautiful. This triptych shows Genji and his lover walking with umbrellas in the snow, accompanied by many maids. For some reason,  the Genji, his retinue and a group of pedestrians have turned around to look back at two travelers about to cross a bridge. Against the white snow and the dark night, the characters have a breathable exquisite beauty, and their equally exquisite -- and complicated -- kimonos are even more impressive. Kunisada II introduced highly stylized clouds reminiscent of classic Japanese and Chinese painting. Even more unusually, he placed the image within fanciful golden borders. This is an especially eye-catching, rare find, indeed.
