In 733 a monk named Shanguang found a large piece of driftwood on the shore, and carved it into a statue of Guanyin, which was then given a place of honor in the Komatsu Forest Hill Temple in Nagoya.

The temple in Nagoya had long since collapsed and the statue of Guanyin was out in the elements. In an occasional rainy day, our heroine in the print, Tamazeru-Hime, would pass the temple and cover the statue with her hat, exposing herself to the downpours instead, and endangering her health. Fujiwara no Kenheira, the son of Fujiwara Mototsuki (875-935), was passing by once and saw her, and was so touched by this simple gesture that he took her home and married her. Tamazuru Hime was also honored as "Princess Tamazuka," and she and her husband rebuilt a large temple here in the year 930. Komatsu Temple was renamed " Kasafukuji Temple" to honor her.

Kunisada-Toyokuni III captured this beautiful moment as part of his late-career series depicting famous women of recent and ancient Japanese history. This is a deluxe printing, with the reds printed twice, and the use of synthetic purple dye, which clearly dates it after the West had "opened" Japan. The kimono has a simple pattern, as befitting the heroine, but it is particularly eye-catching because of the contrast between red and deep, rich purple.
